Darth Maul Tarantula: A Striking Arboreal Species for Experienced Keepers

The Darth Maul Tarantula (Psalmopoeus victori) is a striking arboreal tarantula from Mexico, best known for its dramatic dark and red colouring and impressive appearance. This species is highly sought after by tarantula enthusiasts and makes a fantastic addition to an established invertebrate collection.

As an arboreal species, the Darth Maul Tarantula spends much of its time above ground, making use of cork bark, branches and other vertical surfaces to create webbed retreats. It is a particularly fast-moving species and is best kept as a display animal rather than a handling pet.

Care Overview

The Darth Maul Tarantula requires a secure, well-ventilated tall arboreal enclosure with plenty of vertical structure. Cork bark, branches and suitable foliage can provide climbing opportunities and anchor points for the extensive webbing this species may produce.

Humidity should be maintained appropriately while ensuring good ventilation and avoiding stagnant, overly wet conditions. Fresh drinking water should also be available.

It feeds on appropriately sized live insects such as crickets, locusts and roaches.

Important Notes

The Darth Maul Tarantula is very fast and should not be considered a handling species. Unlike many New World tarantulas, Psalmopoeus victori does not possess urticating hairs, so extra care should be taken when feeding, cleaning and maintaining the enclosure.

Always work carefully around the enclosure and ensure it is secure and escape-proof. Providing plenty of vertical structure and a suitable retreat will allow this arboreal species to display its natural behaviours.
