Horsfield's Tortoise: A Hardy and Rewarding Pet Choice

The Horsfield's Tortoise, also known as the Russian Tortoise or Testudo horsfieldii, is a popular tortoise species known for its hardy nature, active behaviour and relatively compact size. With the correct care and husbandry, they can make a rewarding pet for responsible keepers who are prepared for their long-term care needs.

Horsfield's Tortoises require a suitable enclosure, correct UVB lighting, appropriate heating, fresh water, a high-fibre diet and regular access to suitable grazing foods. They can be kept in indoor or outdoor setups depending on the weather, enclosure security and individual husbandry requirements.

Key Care Points

  • Hardy and active tortoise species
  • Requires correct UVB lighting and heating
  • Needs a secure enclosure with plenty of floor space
  • Herbivorous diet based around suitable leafy greens, weeds and edible plants
  • Requires calcium support as part of a balanced care routine
  • Long-lived species requiring a long-term commitment

Diet and Feeding

Horsfield's Tortoises are herbivores and should be offered a suitable diet consisting primarily of high-fibre leafy greens, safe weeds, edible flowers and suitable plant foods. Their diet should be low in sugars and avoid processed foods and unsuitable vegetables.

Fresh water should always be available, and calcium supplementation may be required depending on the tortoise's diet, UVB exposure and overall care routine.

Habitat Guidance

Horsfield's Tortoises are active animals that require plenty of space to explore, graze, bask and retreat. They benefit from a secure enclosure with appropriate substrate, hides, basking areas and UVB lighting.

Outdoor enclosures must be escape-proof and protected from predators and unsuitable weather conditions. Indoor setups should provide adequate floor space, suitable temperatures, UVB lighting, hides and a well-controlled basking area.

Important Notes

Tortoises are a long-term responsibility and can live for many decades with proper care. Always make sure you understand the housing, diet, lighting, temperature and welfare requirements before purchasing.
