Crested Gecko: A Popular and Fascinating Pet Gecko

These Crested Geckos are a popular choice among reptile keepers thanks to their distinctive appearance, manageable size and interesting climbing behaviour. Individual colours, patterns and markings can vary depending on the gecko available.

Crested Geckos are an arboreal species originally from New Caledonia and are recognised for their distinctive crests above the eyes and along the head and back. Their relatively manageable care requirements and unique appearance have made them one of the most popular pet gecko species among reptile keepers.

Please contact The Reptile Realm for current Crested Geckos in stock, individual animal details, setup advice and care guidance before purchasing.

Care Guidance

Crested Geckos require stable husbandry, including suitable heating, secure vertical housing, appropriate climbing opportunities, hides, foliage, fresh water and regular feeding.

As an arboreal species, Crested Geckos benefit from a vertically orientated enclosure containing branches, vines, plants and other suitable décor. Providing plenty of climbing opportunities allows them to make use of the available enclosure space and display natural behaviours.

Appropriate humidity should be maintained, with regular misting used as part of a suitable humidity routine. Good ventilation is important to prevent the enclosure from remaining excessively damp for prolonged periods.

Crested Geckos can be fed a suitable complete Crested Gecko diet, with appropriately sized live insects such as crickets and locusts also being offered as part of a varied feeding routine. Any live insects should be appropriately supplemented, with feeding frequency adjusted according to the gecko’s age, size and condition.

Handling should be calm and gentle, particularly while the gecko is settling into a new environment. Crested Geckos can be active and capable climbers, so care should be taken when handling them to prevent falls or escapes. They can also drop their tails when significantly stressed or threatened, and unlike many other geckos, Crested Geckos do not regenerate their tails.

Important Notes

Crested Geckos can live for many years with proper care, so they should only be purchased by keepers prepared for the long-term responsibility of keeping a reptile.

Colour, pattern, sex, age, size and price may vary depending on the individual gecko available.
