Brazilian White Knee Tarantula: A Large and Impressive Terrestrial Species
The Brazilian White Knee Tarantula (Acanthoscurria geniculata) is a striking terrestrial tarantula from Brazil, best known for its large size, dark colouring and distinctive white bands across the legs. This species is popular with tarantula enthusiasts and makes an impressive addition to an established invertebrate collection.
As a terrestrial species, the Brazilian White Knee spends most of its time on the ground, making use of substrate, hides and other ground-level structures within its enclosure. It is a fast-growing species that can become quite large and is best kept as a display animal rather than a handling pet.
Care Overview
The Brazilian White Knee requires a secure, well-ventilated terrestrial enclosure with sufficient floor space and an appropriate depth of substrate. A sturdy hide can provide a secure retreat, while additional decorations can be used to create a natural-looking environment.
Humidity should be maintained appropriately without allowing the enclosure to become excessively wet or poorly ventilated. A shallow dish of fresh drinking water should always be available.
It feeds on appropriately sized live insects such as crickets, locusts and roaches, with prey size adjusted according to the size of the tarantula.
Suitable For

Intermediate and experienced tarantula keepers
-
Invertebrate enthusiasts
-
Terrestrial tarantula collections
-
Display-focused exotic pet setups
-
Keepers looking for a large, active-growing species
Important Notes
The Brazilian White Knee can be defensive and may readily kick urticating hairs when it feels threatened, so it should not be considered a handling species. It is also a relatively fast-growing tarantula and can become a substantial adult.
Always work carefully around the enclosure and ensure it is secure and escape-proof. Providing appropriate substrate, a suitable hide and enough floor space will allow this terrestrial species to display its natural behaviours.
